Chapter Fourteen

“Well, I guess that was inevitable,” said a deadpan David when I had recounted the events of the meeting and its aftermath. I had come upon him sitting on one end of the living room couch, with Angus—as usual—taking up the other two-thirds while seeking a lap for his wiry head.

“Oh, come on, David. Can you say that you really expected Dwight to be arrested, right there at a public meeting?” Sometimes my husband takes his phlegmatic “nothing surprises me” attitude beyond the reasonable. I was still too excited to sit down and had been striding around the room while going through my story, waving my arms at emotional moments. “He’s hardly the only suspect.”

“Okay, maybe not the way it was done,” he admitted. “But everything seemed to be pointed toward him, based on what you saw and heard. The mayor threatened him; she was holding his feet to the fire on this development thing; her activities were putting the City in an impossible financial situation and creating liability that would have dragged him down, too. If he didn’t see any other way to save his job, maybe he thought getting rid of Greta was the only answer. Plus, there is the evidence of means and opportunity you provided. He definitely was there during the fireworks and could have been in the logging area before you saw him at the pavilion.”

“I get that,” I said. “But it seems a lot more plausible to just resign and get out of town than kill one of your employers for causing you trouble.”

“You may think that, but keep in mind that you weren’t stuck with Greta on your back all the time,” David smiled.

I saw where he was going. “True. If I couldn’t stand to be around her and her half-witted pronouncements for more than a few minutes, what would it have been like to have to meet with her for hours at a time? Let alone trying to counter her demands. I wonder how much opposition he put up.”

“And how long it took him to give up trying,” David said resignedly.

“If he does turn out to be guilty,” I said morosely, “I wish he could just have been driven to drink instead. Greta Sutton is a horrible reason to spend the rest of your life in prison.”
